KATHMANDU, Sept 19:Two army men were killed and two others sustained injuries in separate incidents of Maoist attacks in Chitwan and Surkhet, on Thursday morning, according to our reporters from the respective districts.
A report from Surkhet said that a soldier of the Royal Nepal Army died instantly and two others sustained injuries in a landmine blast reportedly laid by rebel Maoists near Sotkhola River along the Surkhet-Jumla highway.
Security sources said that the landmine exploded suddenly when a team of army men was clearing the highway blocked by the rebels on Monday. The injured security men were airlifted to Kathmandu for treatment. The rebels had felled huge trees to block the road along the 27-kilometre section of the highway on Monday. Vehicular movement along the road has been suspended indefinitely for public security.
Meanwhile, quoting Chitwan Chief District Officer Ratna Kaji Bajracharya, our reporter said that four rebels on bicycles shot dead 26-year-old Lance Corporal Akash Kumar Mahato at his home at Gunjanagar VDC-9. The deceased, who was on home leave at the time of murder, was assigned in the Kasara-based Devidatta Gan (barrack).
Eyewitnesses said that the soldier was taken about 200 metres away from his home and shot dead. This is the third incident in the district that the rebels have killed three security men within two weeks. Security forces have been mobilised in the area to search for the rebels responsible for the murder.
