Two soldiers were killed in a land mine explosion in Dandeldhura Monday and six Maoists were killed in continuing military operations in Sunsari and Kalikot Saturday and Sunday, the Defence Ministry said.
Two security personnel died and an unspecified number were injured in a land mine explosion at Jogbuda in Dandeldhura Monday, the home district of Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, the Ministry said. The joint army police team was on a patrol.
The injured have been airlifted to the capital for treatment at the Birendra Military Hospital.
The army shot dead Punya Prasad Koirala alias Shanker at Akana in Sunsari district Saturday; Koirala was involved in planning terrorist strategy, the Ministry said. The army shot dead five insurgents at Mugra in Kalikot Sunday.
The Maoists suffered an unspecified number of casualties during a clash at Kharchowk in Gorkha Sunday, the Ministry said.
Security forces recovered magnum rifles, pistols, arms, documents and rice from the clash sites in Sunsari and Kalikot; the rice was distributed to the needy.
Security forces recovered material to prepare ambushes, combat dresses and logistics from Chandeshwori in Okhaldungha Sunday.
