Nepal, India discuss trans-border conservation

For the third time in five years, Nepali and Indian officials Friday began three days of talks in the capital to cooperate in trans-border biodiversity conservation efforts, officials said. The first and second

meetings were held in 1997 and 1999.

Nepal’s national parks and wildlife sanctuaries in the terai are on the border. The Department of National Park and Wildlife Conservation is hosting the conference.

The seven member Indian delegation is led by S.C. Sharma, Additional Director General of the Ministry of Environment and Forest.

Among other things, the meeting will discuss curbing poaching along the long and porous border open border; officials will also chart out plans to stop the smuggling of herbs and timber across the border as well.
