Maoists blow up Panauti power plant, other details

Maoists overnight blew up the Russian-built Pauanti power plant with pipe bombs putting it out of commission, Radio Nepal said quoting police. The plant was generating 2,000 kw of electricity per hour.

The rebels lobbed two pipe bombs damaging two generators. Security forces have launched a massive hunt for the rebels. Detailed damage to Nepal’s third hydel plant commissioned in the 1960’s is not yet known.

Rebels attacked the plant at midnight Monday. Maoists overnight bombed and damaged the home and cow shed of former minister Rakendra Kharel at Kharelkot in Kavre, the Radio said quoting

first police reports. Rebels have been stepping up attacks in the capital and the rest of the country in recent days.
