The army shot dead at least four Maoists in continuing operations in Dang, Panchthar and Ilam Tuesday but more are feared killed in Dang, the Defence Ministry said Wednesday.

“There have been additional causalities on the side of the terrorists at Rajje Maname though exact details are not yet available,” the Ministry said.

Published reports Wednesday that the army has launched a massive combing operation in the area affected by a communist insurgency.

Two rebels were shot dead in Dang and one each in Panchthar and Ilam. Security forces recovered arms, equipment to assemble booby traps, socket bombs, documents and explosives.

The army distributed 15 quintals of rice, lentils and sugar recovered from the rebels to the needy in Dandeldhura Tuesday. The army treated 450 persons at a temporary health camp in the district

the same day.

Five rebels surrendered to local authorities in Mugu and Rolpa Tuesday, the Ministry said. A so-called secretary of the village government and a militia commandeer surrendered in Mugu while a battalion member surrendered in Rolpa.

Fifteen rebels are feared dead and 30 others were injured in an army assault on rebels on the Ilam, Panchthar border one week ago, Radio Nepal said quoting security sources in Ilam Wednesday.

Previous details of the clash were skimpy. Two persons escaped from rebel abduction and reported the news to an army barrack in Ilam Wednesday.
