India has sought a ” review and revision ” of a bilateral trade treaty before extending its vallidiy beyond December 5, an Indian embassy announcement said Tuesday.
This treaty was signed between by the two governments on December 6, 1991 and further modified by the letters exchanged between the two sides on December 3, 1996. India has extended an invitation to a Nepali government delegation to visit New Delhi “at the earliest when the two sides could discuss this matter,” the Indian embassy said.
A formal communication to this effect, as required under the India Nepal Treaty of Trade, was conveyed Tuesday to the government by the Indian embassy, a press note said. “The government India are confident that mutually acceptable solutions to address the concerns of both countries would be arrived at through consultations,” the announcement said.
India sought quantitative restrictions on five Nepali exports, including vegetable oil, at a review of the treaty implementation in Kathmandu this week. India also sought protection for joint venture industries established in Nepal.The Kathmandu meet ended in a dead-lock on the issue of five Nepali exports.
