Deuba announces sweeping socio-economic reforms

Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba announced sweeping reforms in the social and economic sector today. Addressing the House of Representatives, Lower House of Parliament, Prime Minister Deuba said that the government would introduce land reforms in order to give land to landless and ensure judicial distribution in the land system.

For this, the Prime Minister said, the government would bring about new laws to impose ceiling in land and distribute the excess land to the landless. Until the new law is brought about, the government has restricted all works concerning land registration and transfer effective from today (Friday).

Deuba also said that the government would take action against those who prevent anyone entering into religious sites and performing religious activities on the basis of caste. Deuba declared the practice of untouchability as a social crime. For this purpose, a new Bill would be introduced in parliament to eliminate such religious discrimination and untouchability, the Prime Minister announced.

The Prime Minister also said that a high level commission for the development of oppressed class would be constituted and laws concerning right of women in parental property would be brought about very soon. Deuba promised that the  government would do all possible work to eliminate all kinds of discrimination, exploitation and violence against women.

The government would make sincere efforts to create a mechanism to ensure free and fair election with consultation with all political parties.
