City police have been mobilized for the first time in Bhaktapur from Sunday to protect sites within the municipal area. Twenty-five policemen in five groups began scouring the ancient town at night to prevent thefts of objects. Local communist leader and member of parliament Narayan Man Bijukchhe called for co-operation between the city police, police and and locals to protect the city’s cultural sites.

The city police mobilization comes after a 200-year-old Buddha statue was stolen from a monastery at a village in Dolakha district last week. Eight suspects have been arrested.
