KATHMANDU: One Maoist was shot dead at Myaglung in Tehrathum district in east Nepal and eight others were arrested when rebels fired on security personnel Friday, the Defence Ministry said. Security personnel recovered looted gold and silver ornaments and communist literature from them, the official announcement further said.
Eleven insurgents were arrested in Makwanpur and Dolpa districts Friday, the Defence Ministry said. No major clashes were reported between Maoists and security personnel Friday after a national emergency was announced November 26 to quell a six year communist rebellion that has claimed more than 2,200 lives on both sides of the conflict.
The district administration in Ramechap district announced night curfew in two places Friday, the announcement said. The army continues its search and combing operations to nab rebels and disarm them.
Meanwhile, the government has ordered officials not to misuse emergency powers to harass the people. The UML main opposition in parliament has formed a committee to monitor the emergency and likely abuses.
