KATHMANDU: A herd of 90 wild elephants came charging across the Mechi river from India and destroyed houses and crops valued at Rs.2 million at Bahungadi village in Jhapa last week, locals said. Frightened residents fled for safety.

The herd also damaged property and crops across the border before entering Nepal.
