KATHMANDU: The army recovered large caches of arms, explosives and combat dress from Maoists in Dhangadi and Kanchanpur districts in far west Nepal in continuing search operations Saturday, the Defence Ministry said Sunday.

The number or the nature of the weapons recovered were not disclosed. Altogether 13 rebels were arrested for investigation in the two districts and Gorkha, the Defence Ministry said. Home Minister Khum Bahadur Khadka inspected operations in the area Sunday.

Meanwhile, Communications Minister and government spokesman Jayaprakash Prasad Gupta said Sunday the emergency slapped natiion-wide in November will not be lifted until the Maoists surrender their weapons and apologize to the people and join the political mainstream.

The emergency was imposed with a “definite purpose” and asked people to bear with the “temporary inconvenience.” He was speaking with reporters at an interaction programme. He said the search operation was progressing well.

Maoists overnight murdered a student activist of the ruling Nepali Congress Party at Lakandra village in Dailekh district, police said. He was identified as Janak Thapa.
