After four hectic days and uninterrupted work, the Roads Department Thursday restored Kathmandu’s road link with Pokhara for one-way traffic.
The Department of Roads built a diversion near Krishnabhir 100 kms west of the capital where 50 meter section of the Chinese built highway collapsed following unprecedented monsoon rains since Sunday to restore vehicular traffic on the Prithvi highway.
Dozens of big and small mudslides blocked the highway. The re-opening of the highway has also partially restored the capital’s road link with the rest of the country.
But workers are still trying to open the Tribhuvan Highway. Vehicles started plying on the Mahendra Highway where a diversion was constructed near Bardibas Thursday after flood waters washed away a
section of the Mahara bridge, officials said.
The unprecedented rains killed more than 200 people and caused millions of rupees in damage to infrastructure and agriculture. Army helicopters Friday continued to rescue marooned people in Makwanpur and the terai districts to safe areas.
