Devi Prasad Ojha resigned from the central committee and other positions in the Nepal Communist Party (ML) ahead of the organization’s central committee meeting in the capital Wednesday, party sources said.

“I resigned to put pressure. Divisions and splits have perpetually plagued the communist movement in Nepal. The people want unity amongst the communist,” Ojha said. The meeting will discuss, among other issues, merger strategy with the Nepal Communist Party (UML), the main opposition in parliament.

The split between the ML and the UML three years has benefited the ruling Nepali Congress Party which re-gained its parliamentary majority in the 1999 general elections. Unity has been elusive even after four rounds of talks.

Debate is raging in the ML on whether to collaborate with extreme Maoists or rejoin the UML.
