Nepal, Kuwait, U.A.E, Singapore register wins

Kuwait beat Malaysia by three wickets Thursday in the opening Group A match of the third Youth Asia Cup-2001 cricket tournament.

Kuwait scored 228 runs in 46.4 overs for the loss of seven wickets chasing a total of 227 runs scored by Malaysia in 49.3 overs for the loss of seven wickets. Malaysia won the toss and sent Kuwait in to bat.

“It was a good winning score. But our bowlers let us down. There were too many loose deliveries while there were some fielding lapses,” Malaysian team manager C. Sivanandan said after the match. Subramaani Gopinath was top scorer hitting 53 runs.

Favourites U.A.E. beat Qatar by one wicket in the other Group A match. Both Malaysia and Qatar have to win Friday’s match to qualify for the semi-finals.

Singapore beat Maldives by eight wickets in a Group B match. Maldives scored 163 runs for the loss of nine wickets in 50 overs. Singapore won the match by scoring 167 runs for the loss of only two wickets in 37.3 overs.

Nepal beat Oman is another Group B match.
