Kathmandu, June 28: Rebels of underground Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) robbed a commercial bank and fled with over 700,000 rupees in Melamchi of Sindhupalchok district, about 50 kilometer north east of Kathmandu, in broad day light Wednesday.
According to police, a group of 10-15 armed Maoist rebels suddenly entered into the branch office of Nepal Bank Ltd. in Melamchi, threatened security and staff of the bank at gun point and robbed the bank.
Police said the rebels also took away two rifles and some ammunition from the security guards of the bank. The police reached only after the rebels fled from the scene, according to eyewitnesses. The police post is just a few meters away from the bank. Maoist rebels had already declared Melamchi as their base area.
