A pro-Maoist trade union has said it has withdrawn its call for indefinite strike among 16 industrial and business enterprises in the country with immediate effect.

Talking to BBC Nepali service over phone Sunday, chairman of All Nepal Trade Union Federation (ANTUF), Shalikram Jamarkattel, said his organisation had decided to withdraw the strike “in view of interests of the labourers.” He did not elaborate.

The pro-Maoist trade union had called an indefinite strike among over a dozen industrial establishments since February 22. But some of the industries had started their operations after remaining closed for a few days, reports said.

ANTUF had forced over 50 industrial establishments including a five star hotel to shut down for over a month in September last year in two phases. The Federation later withdrew its call following a negotiation with the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) and Hotel Association of Nepal (HAN) brokered by a group of rights activists.
