Human rights activists and journalists expressed solidarity as family members of chief district officer of Arghakhanchi, Birendra Prasad Sharma, and local development officer of the district, Sudarsan Prasad Dhakal – who were abducted by the Maoists six weeks ago – appealed for their release Wednesday.

Organising a press conference at the Reporters Club Wednesday, human rights activists and the family members of Sharma and Dhakal appealed to the Maoists to release them immediately and unconditionally as the two were completely innocent. Sharma’s wife Mamata said, “They (Maoists) kidnapped an innocent civil servant. We have been facing mental trauma as they have not revealed his conditions.”

Tears welling up in eyes, Mamata urged the human rights activists and journalists present at the program to take initiatives for the release of her husband and LDO Dhakal who was abducted along with Sharma.

Sharma and Dhakal were abducted from Arghakhanchi district headquarters, Sandhikharka, on January 23.

Dhakal’s wife Gita groaned, “We only got assurances from various sides. But no initiative has been taken for his release. We are only waiting for them (Maoists) to announce their release. What more can we do?”

Human rights activists Padma Ratna Tuladhar and Malla K Sundar urged the Maoist insurgents to release the two on humanitarian grounds.
