Nepal’s eastern region received less than normal precipitation during this year’s monsoons that retreated completely over the kingdom on September 19, a meteorologist said.
“Rainfall in the region was 40 to 60 percent below normal. Dhankuta district received 60 percent less than the normal annual rainfall,” Mandira Rajbhak, Senior Divisional Meteorologist at the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology told a newspaper Sunday.
Government last week announced relief measures for farmers in the region affected by the ensuing drought. But pre monsoon rains in May was good, she said.
Monsoons lasting for 106 days broke over Nepal this year on June 3, a week earlier than normal, Rajbhak said.
