Nepalis receive word of U.S. British attack
Nepalis received the word of the first strike of a U.S. led attack against Afghanistan Sunday shortly after 11 P.M. through radio and television broadcasts as they went to bed or were about to go to sleep.
Nepal is one of 40 countries American President George W. Bush said in an address from the White House Sunday that has supported coalition forces to strike targets in Afghanistan.
Nepal’s communists have opposed government’s decision to principally give the coalition aircraft rights to fly over Nepali air space to refuel in the land-locked kingdom. The support is meaningless if India does not give the coalition forces similar rights.
It was not known immediately if London has deployed British Gurkha forces in Afghanistan. London has deployed Gurkhas in all recent major international conflicts. U.S.and Great Britain are leading the coalition.
A television footage on CNN recently showed British Gurkhas preparing to land in Afghanistan. Nepali officials were not immediately available for comment.
