An annual month long campaign was launched Monday to popularize the use of iodized salt to particularly reduce the incidence of goitre in the kingdom.

Altogether 62.6 percent of Nepal’s 23.4 million are expected to use iodized salt in 2001, up from 55.2 percent of the populace in 1998.

Iodized salt was first imported form India; Japan is helping in establishing plants within the country to fortify imported salt with iodine for greater efficiency.

Iodine loses potency during transport mainly to the hill districts.
