For the first time, King Gyanendra has approved three bills passed by parliament after ascending the throne of June 4, an announcement said.

The new King put the royal seals on bills establishing an armed police force and another legislation to appoint five regional administrators to devolve powers, an announcement of parliament said Wednesday. The third bill receiving royal assent related to health.

The controversial two bills were approved by parliament after Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba assumed office one month ago displacing Girija Prasad Koirala.

Late King Birendra had to re-issue ordinances forming the institutions after the winter session of parliament failed to approve the ordinances earlier this year 60 days after being presented to parliament.

Koirala’s government introduced the ordinances to contain a Maoist insurgency that has claimed more than 1,800 lives in nearly six years.
