United Nations secretary general Kofi Annan has said that sexual violence, abductions and killings have increased in Nepal due to the ongoing insurgency. He said this in a report to the UN Security Council on the protection of civilians in armed conflict.
According to Annapurna Post, in the report, Annan mentioned Nepal as “ one of the worst examples where civilians have been suffering of armed conflict.” Sudan, Iraq and Cote d’Ivoire were other examples of countries where the rights of civilians are badly abused due to armed conflicts.
Saying that it was the duty of the UN to safeguard civilians hit by armed conflicts Annan asked the Security Council and the UN to carry out an intensive study on the situation in these countries and to provide a solution.
