No less than a week after increasing the price of petrol, the government Tuesday hiked public transport fare by 16 to 20 percent as per the recommendation of the fare-review committee.
According to the Ministry of Labor and Transport, the fares for public transport plying on long and medium distances has been raised by 16 percent effective from Tuesday.
Similarly, the fares for small buses plying on short distance routes has been hiked by 18 percent while buses plying on local routes the fare has been hiked by 20 percent on the existing fares. For meter taxis and tempos the fare has been increased by 16.66 per cent and 17.6 per cent respectively.
Taxis have been charging Rs. 12 per kilometer at the moment. This has been increased to Rs. 14 per kilometer. Similarly, the Rs. 8.50 per kilometer being charged by tempos has been increased to Rs. 10.
The fares for goods carriers such as trucks and mini-trucks, microbus and tempos without meters will be fixed by the operators themselves on the basis of open competition. nepalnews.com am Apr 2
