Students in Kathmandu Wednesday morning launched a rally protesting the Tuesday’s death of a colleague in a police firing in Butwal where many others were injured during protests opposing a steep hike in prices of POL products.

The students began the rally from Ratna Park at 8 AM. Seven student organizations affiliated with different political parties are organizing the protest.

Campuses in the capital also closed down Wednesday morning in response to Tuesday night’s call by unions to shutdown educational institutions. The students are meeting at Tri-Chandra Campus later Wednesday to chalk out further protests.

Prime Minister Lokendra Bahadur Chand faces a new crisis with the death of a left student leader; student leaders are expected to announce new protests as the Chand government faces non-cooperation from opposition parties in its effort to gather support for peace talks with Maoists to end a seven-year communist insurgency.

The Chand government completed six months in office Tuesday after a controversial appointment by King Gyanendra on October 4.
