Irate students and police fought pitched battles in various parts of the city Wednesday protesting Tuesdays killing of a student in Butwal. Students hurled stones at police as they tried to remove road blocks.
Vehicular movement in the capital was disrupted after student protesters set up road blocks preventing the movement of vehicles Wednesday, police said. Students burned tires at different places.
Residents in the suburbs reported difficulty entering the city center because of the roadblocks set up by the students.
Protesters smashed at least 10 vehicles of the NEA parked at its head office next to Ratna Park from where students launched their protests in Kathmandu, police said. Protesters torched one vehicle of the Nepal Electricity Authority in Chabhail, police said.
Nobody was admitted to the emergency ward of the Bir Hospital adjacent to the Park until 2.30 in the afternoon despite reports of clashes between police and students, doctors at the ward said.
SAFA tempos, mini and micro buses stayed off the streets. Students are protesting the death of a student in Butwal Tuesday in a police firing; several others were injured in the firing.
Meanwhile, students on a rampage in Butwal, attacked a petrol pump and vehicles, police said. The market is completely closed in response to a strike call by students.
