Chairman of Bhutan People’s Party R.K. Budhathoki, who was assassinated last Sunday, was cremated on the bank of Kankai River in Jhapa Tuesday.
The funeral procession began from late Budhathoki’s residence in Damak. A large number of Bhutanese refugees and local residents of Jhapa took part.
Late Budhathoki’s elder son Akash Budhathoki lit the funeral pyre in accordance with Hindu tradition. He was assassinated last Sunday in Damak when he was attending a political meeting.
Police have mounted a search to catch the assailants who killed the Bhutanese democratic leader. However, assailants have so far not been arrested.
Police said that Ram Chandra Subedi, a refugee living in Pathari camp, is the main assailant. He is still absconding. Several refugee organizations, political parties and human rights have condemned the killing of Budhathoki.
