The Election Commission has announced municipal polls for February 8 next year and said that it is all set to hold parliamentary polls as well but the alliance of seven political parties have decided to boycott the elections actively.

In this context, former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and Ambassador Surya Prashad Shrestha has said that the elections held during the transitional political situation without taking parties into confidence will increase hostilities.

Speaking at an interaction at the Reporters’ Club he said that holding municipal elections is meaningless as it would not form a government accountable to the people. Criticizing the government’s announcement for municipal polls, Shrestha added that the country is not asking for mayors, but for an accountable government and for that parliamentary election should be held with the participation of all political parties.

He pointed out the need of an interim government like the one formed after the popular movement of 1990 to hold the elections in free and fair manner.

He further added that there should be conducive environment for all believing in democracy to participate in the elections for the elections to be possible.

He also opined that the foreigners are also getting frustrated with the present situation of the country, adding the statements of the ambassadors is the result of the political situation of the country.
