The Rastriya Janashakti Party (RJP) has said that the parliamentary elections are not feasible in the present political situation.

The RJP announced this after a meeting of the ‘work performance committee’ chaired by party chairman and former Prime Minister Surya Bahadur Thapa on Monday.

“As elections are indivisible part of the politics in a democratic system, they however should not be seen and treated in divergent ways,” a RJP statement said, adding, “Plus, elections are not quite feasible in the present political context.”

“In the present context, Nepal’s politics is complexly entangled while the crisis of confidence exiting amongst all sides is deepening by the day,” a RJP stated, arguing that elections per se are a positive matter.

The party said all forces in the political scene should realize the reality and work for resolving the crisis to create a favorable situation for elections. The political parties should, however, take the poll announcement in positive light and take it as an entry point, the RJP further stated.

Similarly, the RJP meet denounced the recent media ordinance which has imposed fresh curbs on the independent media, describing it as a move against the press. “Instead of addressing the unsettled issues through discussions with media organizations and senior media persons, the present government has invited confrontation by unilaterally issuing the ordinance. “This is a move against the press.”

His Majesty King Gyanendra in his message to the nation on the occasion of Vijaya Dashami on October 12 ordered the Election Commission to conduct free and fair elections of the House of Representatives by mid-April 2007.

The seven agitating political parties have already announced to boycott the elections while the government has declared – although unofficially – that it would conduct the municipal and parliamentary polls on time even as the seven parties fail to participate.
