PM Thapa, Sri Lankan President meet

Prime minister and current chairman of SAARC Surya Bahadur Thapa and Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga Wednesday met at the Presidential Palace to discuss bilateral relations as well as matters related to the regional body, the Rising Nepal reported from Colombo Thursday.

Premier Thapa and Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wikramasighe also held talks, the daily said, adding, Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Tyronne Fernando also met Prime Minister Thapa.

During the talks with Wikramasinghe, bilateral trade and resuming flights between the two capitals was discussed, the daily said.

“During the talks with the Sri Lankan Foreign Minister, he solicited Nepal’s support for his candidacy for the post of Secretary General of the United Nations.”

“Nepal in return solicited Sri Lanka’s support as it was contesting for the non-permanent membership of the Security Council.”
