KATHMANDU: Following the sharp disagreement between the main allies of the five agitating parties, the NC and the CPN-UML, on forwarding a consensus prime ministerial candidate to the Palace on Monday, the alliance is uncertain about the ‘grand mass-addressing’ program slated for Tuesday afternoon in the capital.
In the five-party emergency meeting on Monday, NC President Girija Prasad Koirala was against sending a prime ministerial name to the palace. He said, ‘The Palace’s offer was nothing more than a humiliation to the agitating parties.’
Meanwhile UML General Secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal firmly stood for the offer saying ‘the offer must be taken as an opportunity to address the political impasse.’
Talking to the BBC Nepali service on Monday evening, Koirala explained why he was against the Palace’s call. He said, “The King’s call was against the stance of the five agitating parties. The call didn’t address the parties representing the dissolved Parliament.”
Talking to Nepalnews on Tuesday, Amik Sherchan, President of the United Left Front, an ally of the agitating five-party, denied the disagreement between the agitating parties. He further said, “Our mass meeting has formally not been cancelled.”
“We are still for the grand mass-meeting and hopefully it will be organized today,” he added. However, UML leader KP Oli on Monday had said that the alliance had canceled its scheduled ‘grand mass-addressing’ on Tuesday.
Senior leaders of the five-party alliance were supposed to address the ‘grand mass meeting’ in Ratna Park today.
