Lawmaker of People’s Front Nepal (PFN), Dilaram Acharya, has alleged that the party leadership has decided to participate in the Seven Party Alliance (SPA) government against the party principle.

Speaking at a press meet in the capital on Tuesday, organized by the dissident faction of the PFN, Acharya said the decision of the central committee of the party was a clear deviation of party leaders from the party principle and greed of party leadership for the post.

The central committee meeting of the PFN had decided to participate in the coalition government of the SPA and also elected Pari Thapa as the leader of the PFN parliamentary party.

“Our party statute has clearly stated that we will play the role of opposition, so the decision of party leadership to join the coalition government is against the party policy and the greed among party leadership for the post,” Acharya said.

The seven party alliance has decided to form a coalition government with representation from all seven political parties. However, Nepal Workers and Peasants Party has decided not to join the government.

Acharya—who was elected to the House of Representatives from western district of Arghakhanchi—also alleged party chairman Amik Sherchan and other leaders of following the agenda of Maoists rather than the agenda being pursued by the PFN.

Stating that the party leadership imposed the decision in the name of majority, Acharya said that they will fight against the wrongdoings of the party leadership.

The dissident faction has also opposed the 3rd point of the 12-point agreement between the seven political parties and the Maoists. The point states that the Royal Nepalese Army and the Maoists’ People’s Liberation Army (PLA) would be placed under the supervision of the United Nations or any other credible international organization during the elections of the constituent assembly.

Welcoming the government’s decision to remove red-corner notice and terrorist tag from Maoists and to form judicial commission to investigate and recommend action against those using excessive force against the pro-democracy activists, Acharya also demanded that investigation and appropriate action be taken against the atrocities committed by the Maoists against SPA cadres.

He further said the parliament should not be dissolved before making legal mechanism for holding the election of the constituent assembly or before announcing the dates for it.

Acharya also hinted formal split in the party. He claimed that of the six lawmakers of the PFN, three were in the dissident faction. However, PFN lawmakers, Chitra Bahadur KC and Hari Acharya, who according to Acharya were in the dissident faction, were not present in the press meet.

PFN was formed merging two separate leftist factions National People’s Front and United People’s Front following the dissolution of the parliament in May, 2002.
