At a time when the government and the Maoists had agreed to invite Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights Nepal (OHCHR) in Nepal to monitor the truce, David Johnson, acting head of the OHCHR has called on the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to monitor the truce and continue to consolidate the peace-building process.
Speaking at a programme organized to mark the sixth anniversary of the NHRC, Johnson said the OHCHR will continue supporting the NHRC.
Speaking at the same programme, chairman of NHRC Nayan Bahadur Khattri said that the Commission’s working procedure and nature of work has changed following the changed political scenario.
Khattri further said though the NHRC had to concentrate on civil and political rights in the past, it will now focus on other aspects of human rights in the days ahead.
He informed that the NHRC investigated 128 incidents and monitored 366 incidents in the last year. Khattri added that the NHRC revealed the whereabouts of 276 people in the same period.
Addressing the program, Minister for Physical Planning and Works Gopal Man Shrestha said the government expects the commission’s effective role during peace talks between the government and the Maoists.
He further said that the government was committed to working together with the NHRC.
