One officer killed, 17 policemen injured in bomb explosion

KATHMANDU: One police officer was killed on the spot and 17 other policemen were injured when a bomb a policeman was carrying exploded in Chakchake police post of Peuthan district, about 500 kilometers west of Kathmandu, Wednesday, police said.

The police officer who was killed was Sudan Shrestha, an assistant sub-inspector. Of the 17 injured, two are in critical condition and have been flown to Kathmandu for treatment.

Others are undergoing treatment in Nepalgunj and Peuthan.
The bomb exploded when the police were moving the bomb in an attempt to defuse it. The incident took place around 1:30 PM Wednesday. Police said the explosion was an accident and are investigating the incident.

Other details are were available. Peuthan is one of the severely affected districts of the Maoist insurgency.
