Maoists continuing violent activities: Army

Maoist insurgents have been carrying out violent activities in different parts of the country despite their unilateral ceasefire, according to the Royal Nepalese Army (RNA).

A press release issued by the RNA’s Directorate of Public Relations (DPR) Sunday said that a group of armed Maoists extorted money from tourists and local traders in Muchu VDC of the mid-western Humla district on October 13.

On the same day, suspected Maoists attacked a house of a villager in Raniban area in Ichankhunarayan VDC, Kathmandu, causing damages to properties.

Similarly, the insurgents set fire to a temple in Tham VDC in the western district of Gulmi on October 12. On the same day, according to the DPR, they looted Rs. 9,000 from a businessman in Sajghat area of Doti district.

Meanwhile, at least seven Maoists involved in military activities in various districts have surrendered to the security forces.

The DPR statement said a Maoist company commander named Yem Bahadur Bista alias Abhiyan surrendered to the security forces in Dailekh district on Friday while another militant surrendered in Sankhuwasabha district on the same day.

In Mugu district, four Maoists surrendered before the security forces on Friday. The Maoist defectors – Man Bahadur Karki, Ratan Bahadur, Niranjan Karki and Jaukala Shahi – came from Kotdanda area, DPR statement added.

CPN (Maoist) chairman Prachanda had announced three-month long unilateral ceasefire on September 3.
