Maoist rebels have abducted district Secretary of Nepali Congress (Democratic) of far-western district of Baitadi, Ghanashyam Bhatta, and district committee member of the same party, Purna Bahadur Bohara, on Sunday.

According to reports, the rebels took Bhatta and Bohara into custody from Sillegada of Srikot VDC this morning where they were taking part in a marriage ceremony.

Their whereabouts remain unknown. The local Maoist leadership has alleged Bhatta of causing serious damage to the party. Details were not available.

The latest incidence of abduction has come within weeks of an agreement signed between the seven party opposition alliance and the CPN (Maoist) in which latter had agreed to allow unrestricted political activities in their strongholds to the former.

NC (D) is a member of the seven party opposition alliance.
