The Maoists carried out a powerful blast at Kanchanpur jail in Mahendranagar, the district headquarters of Kanchanpur on Saturday night. Reports said at least 20 inmates, some of them Maoist cadres, have fled in the jailbreak attempt.
54 Maoists were serving their team at the jail, the reports said. Following the bomb attack, security men guarding the jail had opened fire at the Maoists but the rebels managed to flee. One policeman is missing with his rifle.
Security sources have informed that an investigation has been launched to find out if the jail officials assisted the Maoists in their attempt to release the inmates, reports further said. nepalnews.com mbk Sept 12 04
