Very few vehicles are plying on the streets of Kathmandu and shops in major thoroughfares of the capital remain closed for the second day Tuesday following the two-day strike called by a Maoist-affiliated ethnic organisation.

The Newa National Liberation Front had called the two-day strike (Dec. 20-21) of transport and government offices in protest of what it said killing and act of making its leaders and cadres disappeared by the security forces. But schools, shops and even private offices remain closed for the second day due to fear of reprisal.

The strike in Monday passed off largely peacefully though there were reports of the rebels causing explosions on highways linking capital Kathmandu to enforce their strike.

Various Maoist affiliated groups had also called strikes in Dhading, Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Sindhupalchok districts adjoining Kathmandu valley and central terai district of Rautahat and southern district of Rupandehi on Monday.
