The Mechi and Koshi zones of eastern Nepal remained closed on Friday due to rumours.

A Biratnagar based journalist Tanka Khanal told Nepalnews over phone that major cities, including Biratnagar, remained closed due to rumours that the rebels had called for a ‘closure’ strike in the area.

The pro-Maoist organisation, Kirat Liberation Front, had called the local media and clarified that their party had imposed the shutdown strike only on 24, 25 and 30th December, Khanal told Nepalnews. “Despite that, traffic, schools, shops and business has remained disrupted due to the rumours of strikes since the last 10 days,” journalist Khanal added.

The Maoists called the strike in protest of the killing and disappearance of their leaders and cadres after arrests by security forces.

The government however, refutes such allegations. nepalnews.com pd Dec 31 04
