He also warned that that the institution of monarchy would ‘come to an end’ if the King does not rescind power and take necessary steps towards reactivating the derailed constitutional process.

He however expressed the hope that the King will correct his mistakes and give the outlet of the present political impasse.

Stating that Nepali Congress is in favor of constitutional monarchy but not the autocratic one, Ranabhat urged the King to take some measures to save the country from current standoff.

Marking the 12-point agreement between the Maoists and political parties as an ice-breaking event, speaker Ranabhat asked the King to utilise this opportunity to find a solution to the crisis plaguing the country. “The 12-point understanding had raised both ‘hopes’ and ‘suspicions’ among people inside and outside the country,” he said.

Ranabhat disagreed with the parties-Maoists understanding to go for constituent assembly election, which, he said, would open up new fronts of conflict. He said that an assembly election was not necessary as socio-political issues raised by the Maoists could be addressed by amending the 1990 constitution.

Opposing the provision of the pact between seven political parties and Maoists to keep the security force under the supervision of UN or other agencies, he said, “It is objectionable to agree to keep the security forces of an independent and sovereign nation under the supervision of others.”
