The concerted efforts shown by the Swoyambhu Management and General Conservation Committee, the Explore Nepal Group, the Kathmandu Metropolitan Corporation and the Tourism Ministry has gone well ahead to free Swoyambhu from illegal constructions that were posing a threat to the religious temple listed in the World Heritage site.
After a series of meeting among the concerned bodies and the Ministry, the illegal structures constructed around the temple were demolished Tuesday with the help of bulldozers. The help of the local committees were also taken to pull down the structures. The department of Archaeology joined hands with other agencies and the Tourism Ministry to demolish the illegal structures.
The department has warned that any attempts to construct new shops and buildings in the area would be taken seriously in future. The Explore Nepal has been launching a campaign to free the temple premises and the nearby surroundings from garbage.
