Rare conjoin twin sisters Ganga and Jamuna returned home Sunday from Singapore after marathon surgery in the island republic earlier in the year to separate their brains.

Amid chaotic scenes at the Tribhuvan International Airport, relatives of the Siamese twins prevented photo journalists from photographing the twins who gained international fame after their successful separation on April 6, eleven months after their birth.

They were born in the Prashuti Griha in Thapathali in May last year and went to Singapore four months later for the complex operation conducted with donations from Singaporeans and Nepalis living in the island.

The Singapore Hospital (SGH) discharged the twins to the care of r. Basant Pant, Chief of Neurosurgery at the Model Hospital in Kathmandu.

“They continue to show daily improvement with the aid of rehabilitative therapy and are fit for discharge,” the SGH said before releasing the twins.

The Singapore doctors said they “are committed to the twins’ well-being and will collaborate and extend services anytime if the need arises.”

The parents and grandparents have been taught how to feed, bathe, carry and play with the twins so that they are adequately prepared to take over the role of caregivers.

8-month-old Jamuna now measures 76cms and weighs 8.0kgs while Ganga weighs 8.2kgs and measures 97cms.
