The four agitating political parties Monday decided to intensify their agitation against ‘regression’.

A meeting of the top leaders of Nepali Congress (NC), People’s Front Nepal (PFN), Nepal Workers and Peasants Party (NWPP) and Nepal Sadbhawana Party (NSP) decided that the anti-regression movement should be taken to new heights to restore sovereignty in the people. The Central People’s Movement Committee will finalize the agitation programs beginning September 21.

A joint statement issued after the meeting said the four agitating parties have agreed to go for constituent assembly with due respect to the Constitution of 1990. To activate the Constitution, the statement said, reinstatement of the dissolved House of Representatives is a precondition.

The four-party alliance has reiterated its adherence to the 18-point agenda for a “forward-looking solution” to the problem facing the country, which was announced three months ago.

Through the statement, the parties also called upon the Maoists to come to the negotiating table to give an outlet to the conflict in a peaceful manner. The parties at the same time condemned the killings and perpetration against political cadres.

The four parties ruled out the possibility of supporting any government formed under the Article 127. “Four parties will not join any government formed under the Article 127,” the statement said.

The parties made it a point to criticize the government for not taking steps to end the ongoing industrial strikes. “The regressive government has shown utter indifference to the plights of the laborers,” the statement said, urging the Maoist labor union not to immediately withdraw the strikes.

NC president Girija Prasad Koirala, PFN chairman Amik Sherchan, NWPP chairman Narayanman Bijukchee and vice-chairman of NSP (Aanandidevi) Bharat Bimal Yadav were present at the meeting along with other central leaders. nepalnews.com mbk Sept 13 04
