KATHMANDU:  Former prime minister and president of the Nepali Congress (Democratic), Sher Bahadur Deuba has responded to a summons from King Gyanendra and is at the royal palace.

Deuba went inside the palace at 10:30am and is reportedly going in as the prime ministerial candidate of a newly formed political alliance between  NC(D), UML and RPP. It is likely that Deuba will be nominated as the prime minister. Leaders of the NC(D) party were unavailable for comment.

Caretaker prime minister Surya Bahadur Thapa also had a royal audience and left the palace at 10:45. There is a throng of media at the palace’s west gate waiting for Deuba to come out.
