Brigade Boys Club (BBC) survived a late scare to beat Boys Union Club (BUC) 3-2 while Mahabir club stunned Sankata Club 1-0 at the ANFA Martyrs’ Memorial “A” Division League football tournament played at Dashrath stadium today.
Despite leading by three goals, BBC almost did not get the three points as BUC scored two late goals to make the end of the match an exciting one.
BBC drew first blood off deft Nigerian striker Obagbemiro Junior in the 10th minute. Junior found himself free with the ball, and dribbled past the goalie before firing home a leading goal.
After the re-start, BBC scored its 2nd goal through defender Aakash Chhantyal when he deftly netted a goal off Kendra Limbu’s right flank cross. Then Obagbemiro Junior turned playmaker when he supplied a superb cross for Milan Chandra Rai, who fired home the third goal.
When the clock struck 80 minutes, BUC got regenerated and started to pressure BBC. In the 85th minute, Bishnu Sunuwar pulled down BUC super sub Amir Karki inside the D-box, resulting in a spot kick. Utsav KC netted the spot kick to bring down the deficit. Then, Sachindra Dhimal drew the attention of all, scoring a spectacular long range goal in the 89th minute to provide some hopes of draw. BUC could have leveled the score in the dying moments, but Bijaya Maharjan’s missed shot shattered all hopes of a draw.
Earlier, minnows Mahabir club stunned fancy Sankata Club by a solitary goal to collect points to stay in mid-table. Himal Thapa scored the match-wining goal in the 52nd minute. Sankata had to bear a blocked penalty shot when Kailash Dongol’s penalty kick in the 22nd minute was saved by Mahabir goalie Min Basnet.
