The Royal Nepalese Army chief Pyar Jung Thapa Monday sent a letter to the Supreme Court in response to the latter’s query as to why the army is not corresponding to the court vis-à-vis extra-judicial detentions and missing cases.
In his two-page reply forwarded to the apex court through the Attorney General’s Office, the army chief has said concerned officials have now been ordered to send replies from their respective levels.
General Thapa has argued that the kind of response the court sought in earlier days from the army was not in line with the norms of what is called the ‘chain of command’ of the military.
Deciding on a writ, the SC had a week ago, asked the army to send a reply as to why it is not cooperating in the legal process.
Recently, the army had barred the National Human Rights Commission members from carrying out inspections at a barrack in Kathmandu over the alleged detention of Krishna KC, a pro-Maoist student leader.
In that case, the SC had asked the NHRC to send a report after visiting the military custody.
