68 protestors arrested in Valley

The Home Ministry has said police took into control 68 people from Kathmandu and Bhaktapur involved in vandalizing vehicles plying the roads and obstructing the public during the valleywide shutdown strike called by the opposition alliance of seven political parties on Friday.

Those arrested include Kathmandu district secretary of CPN (UML), Rameswore Phuyal.

The alliance had called nationwide protests on Friday and a shutdown strike in Kathmandu valley in protest of the killing of a dozen civilians by an off duty security personnel at Nagarkot, east of Kathmandu, around midnight on Wednesday.

The Home Ministry also informed that 14 police personnel were injured in Kathmandu and nine police personnel were injured in Bhaktapur area.

Students in most of the government colleges in the valley burnt tyres on the roads to protest the killings.

Police and students engaged in minor clashes in front of many campuses including Sankardev Campus at Putalisadak, RR Campus at the Exhibition Road, Ascol Campus ainchour, Patan Engineering Campus and Bhaktapur Campus areas.

Major markets, educational institutions and business houses remained shut today.

Heavy police were deployed at major intersections around the valley to take control of any untoward incidents.

The eastern town of Biratnagar remains tense after students from local Mahendra Morang campus pelted stones at a local hotel where the Election Commission was holding a regional workshop in the run up to the municipal elections slated on February 8, next year.

According to reports, agitating students pelted stones at the Eastern Star Hotel at the Road Cess chowk, just in front of their campus, this morning as the inauguration of the two-day workshop got underway. Chief Election Commissioner, Keshav Raj Rjbhandari, was also present on the occasion.
