Even as major political parties have announced not to participate in the municipal elections being held within the current Nepali year, Chief Election Commissioner Keshab Raj Rajbhandari has said that preparations for the polls are in the final stage.

“We are in the final stage of preparations for the elections. The dates will be announced by mid-October,” reports quoted the Chief Election Commissioner as saying during conversation with media persons in Birgunj Sunday.

Rajbhandari went on to say that elections would be conducted even if the agitating political parties boycotted them. Security situation in all 58 municipalities has become favourable, he claimed.

Dubbing the polls as a ploy to extend the ‘King’s autocratic rule’, seven political parties that have been waging a democratic movement since Feb 1 have already announced to actively boycott the polls.
