The ‘World AIDS Day’ is being observed across the country Sunday with the slogan ‘Live and Let Others Live”. Health Minister Dr. Upendra Devkota in his message on the “World AIDS Day” said all citizens must show concerted efforts to do away with the narrow-minded attitude of looking down upon the AIDS patients in order to prevent the disease from spreading to the lowest strata of the society.

He has appealed to the Nepalese at large not to neglect the AID patients in the social domain as AIDS is only transmitted through unprotected sexual contact, using of infected injection and syringe and transfusion of unexamined blood.

Dr. Devkota said the government was working to curb the epidemic under the National Strategy for HIV/AIDS control 2002-2006. There are around 58,000 Nepalese living with HIV and AIDS, according to experts working in the field.

HIV/AIDS has stood out to be a sociological problem in Nepal where people have less knowledge about the disease and treat those with full-blown AIDS as outcastes.
