On the day Maoist chairman issued a strong warning to improve conditions of cantonments, the meeting of Camp Management Committee assigned the job of building proper camps to the Ministry of Works and Physical Planning – which is led by senior Maoist leader Hisila Yami.

Even as Prachanda had warned that his party would unleash massive stir if no decision is made by Saturday to improve camp conditions where its People’s Liberation Army (PLA) combatants have been staying, the meeting of the committee was held at Ministry of Peace and Reconstruction in Singhdurbar.

There are seven main and 21 satellite camps spread across the country. The physical conditions in the camps have been very poor and even the United Nations has been asking the authorities to improve their conditions.

“All the responsibility (of building proper camps) has been given to the Ministry of Works and Physical Planning. Required funds would be released soon,” said Home Minister Krishna Sitaula.

Minister Yami vowed to complete the building of camps before monsoon. “Works will start right away,” she said.

The meeting was coordinated by Minister for Peace and Reconstruction Ram Chandra Poudel. It was attended by Home Minister, Minister Yami, Finance Minister Dr. Ram Sharan Mahat, Information and Communication Minister Krishna Bahadur Mahara and Minister of State for Water Resources Gyanendra Bahadur Karki.
