Temporary women employees under the Women Development Department (WDD) have begun an indefinite sin-in programme in front of the Women, Children and Social Welfare Ministry in Singh Durbar from Wednesday morning.

The agitation started two days after Kathmandu Metropolitan City agreed to make all temporary employees permanent.

Talking to Nepalnews on Wednesday, Women Development Supervisor Nirmala Kaki said the sit-in programme will continue till their demands are met. She said Minister for Women Urmila Aryal visited them and assured to raise their demands before the next cabinet meeting.

The agitating women also met Deputy Prime Minister Amik Sherchen this morning to inform him about their demands. “We found him positive towards our demands and assured that the issue will be discussed in the cabinet meeting,” Karki said.

Karki said that women from other districts are also gathering in Singha Durbar to mount pressure on government. “More than 400 women employees will arrive in Kathmandu by Wednesday evening to joint the agitation,” she said.

WDD and Women Development Centres under the department in all 75 districts were established in 1980 for women empowerment. There are over 775 temporary women employees working in the department and the centres, some even for 18 years.
